Yam Kuih



  • 270 g Erawan / Gajah Brand Rice Flour
  • 400 g Yam
  • 100 g Star Brand Wheat Starch
  • 1000 ml Water
  • 3 pieces Small Garlic
  • 3 teaspoons Oil


  • 1 ½ tablespoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Pepper
  • ½ teaspoon Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)
  • 1 ½ tablespoons Sugar


  • 150 g Dried prawns (ground)
  • 1 Red chilly (sliced in pieces)
  • 75 g Fried sliced onions
  • 1 stalk Spring onion (in small pieces)
  • 10 tablespoons Oil


  • Mix Erawan / Gajah Brand Rice Flour, Star Brand Wheat Starch and water. Strain and stir well.
  • Cut yam into 2 equal portions with one portion in cubes.
  • Steam remaining portion of yam until soft. Smash it and mix well with flour batter.
  • Fry sliced onions with 10 tablespoons of oil until turns brown. Remove fried onions. Fry driedprawns with little sugar (for garnishing) .
  • Fry garlic with oil. Add in yam cubes and seasonings. Pour in flour and smashed yam mixture.Stir continuously under medium heat until batter thickens.
  • Pour batter into a well-greased 10" square tin. Flatten the surface.
  • Steam for 30 minutes. After steaming, immediately garnish with dried prawns, fried slicedonions, spring onions and chillies.
  • Let cake cool.
